DARFUR

Read about the background of the conflict in Darfur.

2010:
Violence Abates but Study Shows Disease Kills 80%

Disease rather than violence has killed more than 80 percent of the 300,000 dead since the Darfur conflict began six years ago. That was the conclusion of a study by the Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters at the Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels on Friday January 22, 2010.

Since February 2003, when the Darfur African rebels rose up against the Arab-dominated regime in Khartoum, about 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million have fled their homes in Darfur, according to the United Nations.

On March 4, 2009, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan on accusation of two counts of war crimes and five crimes against humanity in Darfur.

Throughout 2006 and the years before that, a coalition of people and organizations have worked very hard to save lives and relieve the situation in Darfur.

A tremendous lot has been achieved by this coalition of conscience.

  • It has created global awareness about the Darfur situation and helped to keep events in Darfur ever present in people's minds.
  • It has helped galvanize the international effort to persuade the government in Sudan to quickly end the conflict and stop the suffering and death in Darfur.

"But the violence in the region is like a brush fire in the dry season - the crisis is spreading to neighboring Chad and the Central African Republic." -- Save Darfur Coalition.
