Hofstra University invites applications for the position of Resident Director, an opportunity to engage students, faculty and staff in the on campus living environment. The Resident Director reports to an Assistant Director in a dynamic department led by the Assistant Dean of Students and Director who provides clear direction and sense of teamwork within the department while expanding opportunities for collaboration between residential programs and departments both within and outside Student Affairs. The Division of Student Affairs is open to new and innovative ideas for developing the vision for the residential experience, and is eager to become a leader in the field, contributing to best practices for the profession while remaining student centered.

Position Summary:

The Resident Director is a professional, 12-month, live-in position responsible for supporting the mission of the University by developing residential living environments conducive to student learning and academic success, respecting, appreciating, and advocating for the diversity of our student population, and supporting the holistic development of approximately 3500 campus residents. Duties include: managing a residential area of 400 to 800 residents; supervision and professional development of resident assistants and/or graduate assistants; liaison with administrators, faculty and staff; the development of specialized programming in the residence halls, which may include the management and growth of Themed Living Communities (TLCs), and Living Learning Communities (LLCs); active participation in the student conduct process; and oversight of hall government. The Resident Director actively participates in staff recruitment, selection and training activities, management of residence hall facility and occupancy issues, and campus critical incident response. On call responsibilities on a duty rotation basis and evening and weekend work is required. Resident Directors also support large-scale campus events.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to :

Supervision of paraprofessional resident assistant staff

Work collaboratively and liaison with administrators, faculty and staff

Supports the academic mission of the University

Participates in professional and student staff recruitment, selection and training activities

Management of residence hall facilities and occupancy issues

Participation in on-duty rotation. Weeknights, weekends and holidays are required

Interaction with other campus wide areas including, but not limited to Public Safety, Student Health and Counseling Center, Office of Student Leadership and Engagement, Intercultural Engagement and Inclusion, International Student Programs and Commuter Student Services Office in support with large scale events

Oversight and advisement of Residence Hall Council

Administrative tasks including room changes, occupancy reports and distribution of annual surveys

Involvement in campus-wide events, including Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Orientation and Admission Events

Serve as University conduct officer and serve on administrative hearing boards

Other project and committee work as assigned

Qualifications:

Master’s required. Direct experience, transferrable experience or comprehensive knowledge of Residential Life required. Candidate must have strong counseling skills, good professional judgment, and supervisory experience. In addition, candidates will need a strong background in student, staff and community development, good computer skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
