Print Collections Strategist


The University of Virginia Library seeks a Print Collections Strategist to lead collaborative efforts to oversee the circulating and reference print collections, through deep understanding of the collection subject matter and usage. The position's primary activities will involve planning, implementing and documenting a holistic vision for collections that exist in a complex ecosystem across multiple buildings, including a nearby high density storage facility. The incumbent will determine recommendations for the appropriate balance of materials in various library locations through analysis of print collections, create and maintain policies and procedures for collections evaluations and relocations, and coordinate the placement of print periodicals. The Print Collections Strategist will possess the ability to assess print collections at a granular, disciplinary level and apply this assessment to a well-balanced process of materials transfers among libraries as well as deselection of materials. Collaborating with colleagues across multiple buildings and areas of expertise, the incumbent will utilize excellent interpersonal and communication skills to ensure that all stakeholders are consulted in advance of decision-making and understand decisions made. This position will fulfill the library's need for management, assessment, and arrangement of existing print materials across all collections that circulate.

The Print Collections Strategist librarian works to oversee the ecosystem of existing print materials in the circulating and reference collections across multiple locations. This entails evaluating and analyzing the arrangement of print materials on the shelves, planning and managing the relocation of materials, and creating and maintaining policies and procedures for monographic and serial print collections, as appropriate. The Print Collections Strategist must possess the ability to analyze the collection from both holistic and disciplinary perspectives. This librarian will use these assessment techniques to develop strategies for well-managed processes of materials transfers among libraries as well as deselection of materials. This employee collaborates with colleagues with across all library locations and departments.

Qualifications:

Required: Master's degree in Library Science or equivalent. Minimum three years' experience working in collections in an academic library. Experience working with and managing print-focused collections in the humanities and social sciences; Experience in applying analytical skills and methodologies to print collections; Experience writing policies and procedures; Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication; Ability to work collegially and cooperatively within and across organizations; Ability to encourage the cooperation of others; Conceptual and analytical skills; Demonstrated initiative; Ability and willingness to make informed decisions in a timely manner.
