Southern / Northern California Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC)IMDiversity EON Member
The First Comprehensive Web Sites for Jobs in Higher Education in Southern and Northern California
Searching for a job in higher education at California colleges and universities just got easier due to the development of two new employment Web sites: www.socalherc.org and www.norcalherc.org. The Southern California Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (SC-HERC) and Northern California Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (NC-HERC)—two groups of area campuses founded by the University of California—just launched www.socalherc.org and www.norcalherc.org, the first higher education employment web sites in California. The sites are designed to allow a wide variety of job seekers access to thousands of jobs in higher education available at HERC member campuses across California. The HERC Web site is a tremendous advance for people seeking careers in a college or university setting. The site gives job seekers access to centralized information about thousands of faculty and staff positions at the consortium’s member institutions, which include campuses of the University of California, California State Universities and the California Community Colleges, as well as private colleges and universities. Previously, job seekers had to visit the Web sites of individual institutions to stay abreast of these employment opportunities. Job seekers have free access to the HERC employment Web site and all of its features including, the “myJobs” feature, which automatically sends e-mails to potential applicants when jobs that match their profiles are posted. In addition, the site features a dual career search which enables job seekers to link search criteria with that of a spouse or partner ensuring you are notified when jobs become available that meet both job seeker’s search criteria. Adrienne Ferrari, who is currently looking for an administrative position in higher education, utilizes the HERC Web site in her job search. “The Southern California HERC Web site not only met but easily exceeded every expectation I had”. She says, “I have already recommended the site to every person I know looking for employment in higher education”. Colleges and universities employ people in a wide range of fields with all levels of education. In addition to faculty and research positions, there are also positions for people in many other occupations, including lawyers, nurses, mechanics, engineers, web developers, accountants, psychologists, animal care specialists, medical assistants, administrative assistants, and dozens of others. “This is an important and worthwhile effort” says Jennefer Collins, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Academic Personnel at UCSD, “one that ensures our jobs are filled with the best candidates, to benefit our individual campuses, our students, and our communities.” One user of the NorCalHERC site wrote, “Because of your site, I was able to make the transition from Oregon to San Francisco without missing a single day of work during one of the darkest economies in recent memory. Thank you.” SoCalHERC draws its members from institutions located south of Monterey County. Current member institutions are located as far north as Santa Barbara, as far east as Palm Desert, and as far south as San Diego. NorCalHERC draws its members from institutions located between Humbolt, California on the north, Monterey, California on the south, Merced, California on the east and the California coast on the west.
