One of the first things to do when planning a trip out of the country is to contact the right government agency that will give you contact information for your embassy in the country you are visiting. Prepare for all emergencies. If you are a U.S. citizen, the State Department is usually a good place to start.

You should also learn everything you can about the country of your vacation. Start with the country's embassy in your country. In this case start with the Chinese embassy in the United States.

Popular Vacation Periods

The most popular vacation times in China are in the months of May, September and October. Weather conditions are better during these months, but the popular vacation spots are usually crowded and prices are higher.

The low season for vacations is during the winter period in China, between the months of November through to March.

Festival season in China is during the first week of May and October. Late in January and early February is spring festival season. These are all busy tourism times in China.

Popular China Vacation Destinations

The most popular vacation spots in China are steeped in the country's rich history. More of the lengths of the Great Wall of China are still being discovered. Thousands of life-sized, terra cotta warriors and horses excavated at the 210 BC burial site of the first Chinese emperor, Qin Shihuangdi, are now housed in the Museum of the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an. Beijing's Forbidden City is another popular tourist destination. The city of Shanghai has a museum of ancient Chinese art.

Nature lovers can take a cruise down the Yangtze River, the longest river, not just in China, but in all Asia and the third longest in the world. The Yangtze divides China into northern and southern parts. It flows in a west to east direction from the Tibetan Plateau to the East China Sea.

The Chinese government allows group tours of Tibet. The country is also known as 'the roof of the world' because of its high altitude. Tibet is a popular tourist destination.
