Associate / Full Professor, Structural Engineering for Extreme Events

Job Description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno, invites applications for a Full Professor and an Associate Professor in structural engineering for extreme events. These tenured positions will be responsible for teaching, research, and service responsibilities, as described below.

Based on the University’s mission as a land grant institution, faculty duties will include undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision of graduate students, performance of research, development of externally funded research projects, and university and professional service. Candidates must have registered as a professional engineer or demonstrate an intent to become registered. The successful candidate for Full Professor is expected to serve as Director of the Center for Civil Engineering Earthquake Research. This position is expected to manage and sustain existing research programs, build upon existing research capacity and infrastructure, create new research initiatives, and pursue long-term external funding for laboratory operations. The intended start date for both positions is July 1, 2024.

Required Qualifications - Full Professor

A Ph.D. in civil engineering, or a closely related field, and an extensive research background in structural engineering are required. The candidate is required to have expertise in experimental methods applied to structural engineering as well as computational structural mechanics related to civil infrastructure resilience under extreme events. Candidates must have an established national and international reputation for quality and breadth of research, and a strong record of securing competitive research grants. In addition, the candidate is required to have experience leading large-scale and collaborative research proposals and projects, and developing and sustaining strategic research programs, Candidates must also have a demonstrable record in innovative and inclusive teaching.

Preferred Qualifications - Full Professor

In addition to the above-required qualifications, extensive research experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable: shake table experiments, hybrid simulation, additive manufacturing, advanced materials, bridge engineering, soil-structure interaction, multi-hazard engineering, and emerging scientific areas in structural engineering. In addition, experience managing structural research laboratory infrastructure and personnel is desirable together with evidence of meaningful international collaborations and networking.

Department Information - Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is a research-active department with over 550 B.S., M.S., and PhD students, 21 tenured/tenure-track faculty, six research faculty and various technical staff. The department offers ABET-accredited B.S. degree programs in both Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering, and graduate programs in five sub-disciplines that are nationally ranked by US News and World Report. In 2023 the department had annual research expenditures of over $9 million funded by external grants. It actively promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its programs and activities.

The Structural and Earthquake Engineering program in CEE is recognized as one of the university’s premier research programs with seven academic faculty, two research faculty and approximately 35 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Its state-of-the-art laboratories are among the most advanced in the United States and perhaps the world. They comprise the 10,000 sq. ft. Large-Scale Structures Laboratory (LSSL) with 7,500 sq. ft. of high-bay strong-floor space, and the 44,000 sq. ft. Earthquake Engineering Laboratory (EEL) with office space for graduate students, visitors and staff, a 150-seat auditorium, and 9,600 sq. ft. of high-bay strong-floor space. The latter houses the only re-locatable four-shake table array in the U.S. capable of simulating earthquakes at large-scale for system-level experiments. This array includes three identical, 50-ton, biaxial shake tables, and a 50-ton, triaxial, shake table. A fifth table and 500-ton laminar soil box have recently been completed and commissioned in the LSSL This box is the largest such facility in the U.S. and perhaps the second largest in the world for studying soil-structure interaction at large-scale. In addition, several servo-hydraulic actuators are available for use in both EEL and LSSL for hybrid experiments.
