About the Department
The Department of Psychology has 32 permanent full-time faculty. In addition to our graduate program in Counseling and undergraduate B.S. psychology major, the Psychology department offers an undergraduate degree in behavioral neuroscience and a master’s programs in experimental psychology. We are also home to the internationally recognized Center for Cross-Cultural Research.

The Counseling Program, with Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling specialty areas, has been accredited by CACREP since 1993. Both are full-time, 2-year cohort-based programs which enjoy considerable institutional support. The mission of the Counseling Programs is to prepare knowledgeable, skilled, culturally sensitive, and ethical professional counselors who meet the relevant licensing or credentialing standards for practice in mental health and public and private educational settings in the State of Washington. We believe this is best accomplished in small rigorous programs in which students have substantive opportunities to practice their developing counseling skills under the supervision of faculty who are active contributors to the profession through research and service.

The Psychology Department and Counseling Program support Western's mission, which states that together with our students, staff, and faculty, we are committed to making a positive impact in the state and the world with a shared focus on academic excellence and inclusive achievement. We encourage applications from women, people of color, people with disabilities, veterans, and other candidates from underrepresented backgrounds and with diverse experiences interested in this opportunity.
