Full Salary Range: Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $82,300 - $151,700/year.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

With an annual operating budget of $3.7 million dollars, the University Center is home to more than 2,500 conference and meeting reservations with over 170,000 people in attendance. Daily, over 11,000 campus visitors, students, faculty, staff visit the UCen to eat, drink, shop, study or attend a meeting or event. The Events Center hosts more than 40 intercollegiate events per year as well as concerts, campus intramurals, and career fairs that draw over 100,000 guests annually. Additionally, the Events Center serves as one of several campus emergency evacuation centers. Under the general direction of the Director, University Center, and Events Center and Administration, the Associate Director serves as a key leader in the successful operation of the University Center and the Events Center, sharing responsibilities for overall management which includes University Center Operations, Project Management, Conference Services, and Events Center Operations. Directly supervises 2 FTE and indirectly supervises 5 staff and 80 student workers. The Associate Director has broad responsibility and authority for operational development and decision making. This includes establishing policies, procedures and delivery systems as well as strategic planning to maximize the growth potential of services and revenue. In the absence of the Director, the Associate Director assumes responsibility for the entire UCen Administration organization, including the Events Center and acts with full authority on behalf of the Director, University Center, Events Center and Administration. The University Center, Events Center, Administration is a department within Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE). The Associate Director is expected to regularly attend campus events held in the Events Center.

HDAE is responsible for an auxiliary services operation with annual operating and capital budgets of $180 million, capital and major maintenance reserves of $40 million and housing over 10,000 students, faculty and family residents on campus. HDAE serves 21,000 customers daily in its retail and board dining programs, manages the University Center and University Campus Store, hosts 150,000 guests annually for conferences and meetings, manages a major events center, oversees the administration of transportation, parking and fleet services, manages IT services for Administrative Services (ARIT), and oversees The Club & Guest House.

Required Qualifications

● Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

● 5-7 years proven experience in management, leadership and supervision of staff necessary to execute the successful operation of the University Center and Events Center operations including conferences, meetings, sporting events, concerts and other student programming, as well as facility management that includes Campus Dining retail outlets and the Campus Store.

● 5-7 Years experience using a wide range of business methods, analytical techniques and conceptual tools to understand and craft new business enterprises.

● 3-5 years proven ability to manage in a diverse environment with focus on client and customer services, entrepreneurship and building and growing a strong business model.

● Must be able to successfully lead, direct, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff utilizing clear and effective interpersonal skills, providing mentorship and demonstrating solid leadership and problem solving skills.

● Requires keen political acumen and skill in judgment, decision-making and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution.

● Must be skilled at collaborating with a variety of constituents including faculty, staff, students, visitors and vendors to work towards shared goals supporting the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the campus.

● Analytical skills to evaluate current business processes, identify areas of growth and opportunity for increased revenue generation.

● Proven history of high productivity and innovation.

● Solid understanding of facility operational systems, maintenance, safety and emergency preparedness.

● Solid knowledge and experience in supervising facility maintenance and major maintenance projects as well as general maintenance and system experience such as basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry and custodial.

● Knowledge of sound fiscal policies and practices, strategic planning.

● Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and comfortable learning new systems.

● Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.

● Highly developed political acumen and communication abilities to build and sustain collaborative relationships with campus constituents.

Preferred Qualifications

● 3-5 years of strong skills in facility project management and experience working with issues and projects surrounding plumbing, electrical, carpentry and custodial.

● 1-3 years experience in a public or private university setting.

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

Operations -50%

Under the general direction of the Director, supports the management and administration for two major facilities heavily utilized by students, faculty, staff and visitors: the University Center (UCen) and Events Center (ECen). Manages the operational systems, facilities and processes related to UCen and ECen programming to ensure profitability, efficiency, customer satisfaction and safety. Provides guidance and direction to the Director on complex operational issues and problems. Oversees the development and review process of systems and procedures for operational efficiency.

Directs and supervises the conference services functions of the UCen which is an important destination for on-campus and off-campus groups to hold meetings and large conferences. Creates and sustains an organization that can respond effectively to the demands of a large conference operation. Defines and demonstrates the level of customer service that is expected from the UCen conference services team. Directs UCen Senior Events Manager and Meetings & Events staff, including the Service Managers Program and the A-V Operators Program, in the development, implementation, interpretation and enforcement of the UCen Meetings & Events policies and procedures. Oversees UCen student programming, including the Hub, which has approximately 100 annual late night and weekend programming events, and is a critical component of student life at UCSB. Creates an organization that provides a programming atmosphere that is fun, innovative, welcoming, and safe.

Manages all aspects of the UCSB Events Center, a large and complex public events program space that hosts athletic, academic, recreational, and special events, and has the authority to make independent decisions for this space. Directs the Events Center Manager on building and event coordination and management. Works frequently with Intercollegiate Athletics, campus safety officials, and other stakeholders to coordinate schedules and events to ensure the smooth and safe operation for all constituents. Serves as an Advisor for regularly scheduled meetings of the Events Center Governance Board. Serves as Ex Officio Events Center Governance Board Member.

Manages the maintenance demands of two multi-use facilities that averages 11,000 visitors per day and includes the Campus Store and Dining facilities in the UCen, and hosts intercollegiate athletics and large events in the Ecen. Works collaboratively with the HDAE Operations Team on Maintenance, Security and Keys, Emergencies, Health and Safety, Energy and Resource Conservation, Equipment and Furniture Replacement and Door Access. Works with Residential Operations Custodial and Maintenance on a six day a week schedule to meet UCen and ECen needs. Works hand in hand with the HDAE Custodial Services in the development, implementation, interpretation and enforcement of custodial policies and procedures for the UCen and Events Centers buildings.

Project Management - 25%

Coordinates all remodeling, renovation, and major maintenance projects within the University Center, and the Events Center. Serves as the contact point for the entire organization from the planning stage of projects, to architect/contractor selection, and review of plans. Working collaboratively with the HDAE Project Management team , the Associate Director plays an active role in all phases of project management and works closely with HDAE Project Managers to ensure that departmental resources are properly allocated. Reviews project documents before final submission to control points such as HDAE Project Management and the Office of Budget & Planning.

Financial - 15%

Works closely with the Director to establish, develop, monitor, and analyze the annual operating budgets for UCen Operations, Meetings & Events, and the Hub. Provides strategic planning to ensure that the University Center and Events Center remain financially solvent and responsive to campus needs. Promotes and markets the facility to generate essential revenue. Develops and directs Events Center capital expenditure programs for the University Center and Events Center. Complies and provides comprehensive analysis for the annual financial reports.

Project Management - 10%

Directly supervises the UCEN and ECEN Senior Events Managers. Indirectly supervises 5 career staff and up to 80 student staff. Actively consults with the Auxiliary Custodial Services Manager on custodial needs. Coordinates staff training and development of programs/education efforts for the University Center Administration. Provides assessment of departmental training needs. Plans and implements departmental training programs and coordinates staff recognition efforts. Works closely with the Director, University Center Administration, Unit Managers and Supervisors. Makes recommendations on the staff organizational structure and determines and implements job duty modifications to better meet client needs. Researches, designs, plans and implements a departmental employee orientation and onboarding program for new staff.
