Job Description
The Department of Mathematics & Physics at Marshall University invites applications for three tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence in Fall 2024. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, or a closely related field prior to the start date of the position.
The department seeks a candidate who will be prepared to pursue research and creative activities in the mathematical sciences, both independently and with students. Requirements for tenure include peer-reviewed publications and grant applications. In addition to demonstrating strong potential for research, candidates must have a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate student research.
The ideal candidate would be an excellent, student-centered instructor with the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in at least one of the following areas:
real analysis, numerical analysis, differential equations, combinatorics and graph theory, statistics, data science, and other courses across the department’s curricula.
Please indicate in your cover letter which area(s) you are qualified to teach and provide supporting evidence in your application materials. In addition, the department values the potential to carry out interdisciplinary research in the areas of physics, forensic science, cyber forensics and security, health sciences, and other applicable research areas of interest to the University.
The full-time teaching load for pre-tenured active researchers is two to three courses per semester. One reference letter should address teaching potential.
The department offers three undergraduate degrees: BS Mathematics, BS Physics, and BS Statistics as well as supports students in mathematics and physics education. The department has small graduate programs leading to an MA in Mathematics with an area of emphasis in Statistics, and an MS in Physics, and Physical and Applied Sciences. Most courses in the graduate program are joint upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses. The MA program in mathematics offers hybrid courses, with a mix of in-person and virtual students, and occasional evening courses, in a planned rotation.
Marshall University is a student-centered research university, with R2 Carnegie classification, of around 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students, located in Huntington, WV. Many students are first-generation students, commuters, or non-traditional students. In your cover letter, please include a description of how you would support these students or other types of diversity.

The department also seeks candidates who will contribute to the University’s general education curriculum and its emphasis on using high-impact teaching practices, particularly those affiliated with one (or more) of the institution’s pedagogical initiatives (e.g., Community-based Learning, Critical Thinking, First Year Seminar, Writing Across Curriculum, etc.). Additionally, the ideal candidate will contribute to the College’s support of interdisciplinary programs of study.
