Applications are invited for a tenure-track, academic-year Assistant Professor joint position in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematical Sciences and one of the departments in the College of the Environment and Life Sciences. For this position, the tenure home will be the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematical Sciences. A successful candidate will be an applied mathematician with a specialty in one or more of: Biological Sciences; Cell and Molecular Biology; Environmental and Natural Resources; Fisheries, Animal, and Veterinary Sciences; Geosciences; Landscape Architecture; Marine Affairs; Natural Resources Science; and Plant Sciences and Entomology. The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematical Sciences offers programs leading to BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees with applied math options at all levels. Along with the Department of Computer Science and Statistics, we co-govern the Data Science Program, which houses a BA, BS, MS (offered online only), and Graduate Certificate (offered online only). The research activities of the faculty are mainly concentrated in the areas of Complex Dynamical Systems, Data Science, Difference Equations, Discrete Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Numerical PDE’s and Linear Algebra, Optimization Control, and Probability.

The College of Environmental and Life Sciences has 9 departments with roughly 100 faculty who educate more than 2000 students per year in environmental and life sciences as well as environmental economics, management, and policy. The college offers degree programs at the BS, MS, and PhD levels. Faculty conduct research of relevance to the state, the nation, and the world and provide extension activities in support of the University’s land- and sea-grant missions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses; publishing original research in peer-reviewed academic journals; developing extramural grants and obtaining funding to support independent and interdisciplinary research projects; advising undergraduate and graduate students; and engaging in departmental, college, and university service. The teaching load will typically be two courses per semester with possible reduced teaching loads in the first two years and when bought out by an externally funded research grant or administrative work.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or closely related area in mathematical sciences by time of appointment August 2024.

2. Demonstrated research interests in mathematics with applications in environmental and life sciences.

3. Demonstrated ongoing research program and sustained record of publications, commensurate with academic experience.

4. Demonstrated ability to become an effective teacher at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

5. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and oral communication skills.

6. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication.

7. Demonstrated strong interest in incorporating inclusion, diversity, and equity in teaching and scholarship.

8. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Demonstrated ability to secure external funding.

2. Postdoctoral experience or other relevant industry experience.

3. Demonstrated ability to mentor M.S. and Ph.D. students.
