Department Summary
The Department of History at the University of Oregon, part of the Social Sciences division of the College of Arts and Sciences, is a highly accomplished community of teachers and scholars. Our expertise spans the globe –from the Pacific Northwest and the United States to Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, the Middle East, and Africa – and extends across human history, from ancient and medieval times through to the early twenty-first century. Our scholars are engaged in teaching and research projects that examine the myriad ways in which religion, ethnicity, race, class, and gender have shaped the patterns of human experience. Faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students in the Department of History also collaborate on a wide variety of history initiatives with similarly placed University departments focusing on diverse thematic, geographic, and temporal areas.

The Department of History offers degrees (Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science) at the undergraduate level as well as Master of Arts and Doctorate of Philosophy at the graduate level. A group of over two dozen scholars and teachers with a passion for understanding the past in all its dimensions, our distinguished and innovative faculty hold several joint appointments with University administration, the Oregon Humanities Center, and the Wayne Morse Center for Law and Politics, to name just a few. We pride ourselves on the diversity of our faculty and the broad range of our course offerings and research projects. We aim to build a sense of intellectual collaboration among members of the department’s learning community and strive to create a climate of inclusion for students, faculty, and staff.

Position Summary
The Department of History at the University of Oregon invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professor position in modern Asian history, to begin Sept. 16, 2024 (AY 2024-25). The research field is open but the successful candidate will teach two introductory survey courses (such as 191, China Past and Present or 192, Japan Past and Present) and advanced courses in their area of specialization. The teaching responsibility is five courses (2-2-1 on the quarter system, the same teaching load as our tenured faculty). The department is especially interested in candidates whose teaching, research, and mentorship would complement and support the Asian Studies minor. The history department will assign a faculty mentor to support the successful candidate.

Duties for this position will include a course load of five regular courses per year. The appointee will conduct and publish research in an effort to maintain and enhance a national and international reputation. Advising is presently handled through the department's Undergraduate and Graduate Advisors, therefore there is no formal advising expectation. Routine advising of, and contact with, students taking courses is considered a normal part of teaching activities. The appointee will have opportunities to mentor graduate students and will be expected to serve on graduate student committees if invited. The appointee will be expected to have student contact and communication sufficient to fulfill their teaching, research, and service obligations. The appointee will serve on departmental committee(s). UO-wide service and community service options are also available, but not required. Sufficient office hours and administrative obligations associated with instruction, research, service, and supervision are expected.
