Purpose of Position
The Department of English at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in 20th and 21st century US literatures with an emphasis in Indigenous and/or multiethnic literatures.

The position requires a PhD in English or a closely related field. We are seeking candidates with experience in digital humanities who can contribute to a new program in Indigenous Digital Humanities and Archives. This program is part of the new “Expanding Digital Humanities Across Northern Plains Indigenous Higher Educational Institutions Initiative,” a multi-year Mellon Foundation funded collaboration between UND and the North Dakota Tribal College System. The position is contingent upon the availability of funding.

About the Department

The English department is an active unit with B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs. Recent additions to our degree offerings include a certificate in writing and editing (https://und.edu/programs/writing-editing-certificate/index.html), and another Certificate that is being designed in Indigenous Digital Humanities and Archives. We have built a number of digital collections funded by the NEA or the NEH. Our annual Writers Conference (www.undwritersconference.org) has featured thirty-six Pulitzer Prize winners and four Nobel laureates and has brought to the UND campus authors such as Colson Whitehead, Louise Erdrich, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Maxine Hong Kingston, Tommy Orange, Ross Gay, Roxane Gay, Marlon James, N. Scott Momaday and Layli Long Soldier. Our department also has a longstanding involvement with the North Dakota Quarterly.

Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will contribute to the English program and UND LEADS Strategic Plan through strong teaching, scholarly activity, and service within the department, college, university, and community. Our teaching load is two courses a semester, and will include lower-division undergraduate literature courses, upper-division courses, and/or graduate seminars in relevant literary traditions, courses in Indigenous or other multiethnic literatures and digital humanities, as well as courses of the candidate’s own design. We especially welcome candidates with a clear commitment to inclusive pedagogies and fostering access for marginalized, underrepresented students.

Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. in English or related field by August 15, 2024.
Academic credentials and/or publishing experience in Indigenous and/or multiethnic literatures.
Academic credentials and/or publishing/collection building experience in digital humanities.
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
Scholarly work that shows potential for publication in relevant fields.
Statement of teaching philosophy and teaching experience that demonstrates a commitment to excellence in teaching and knowledge of literature pedagogy and digital humanities pedagogy.
Academic credentials that demonstrate the expertise to teach literature at the advanced and graduate levels.
Teaching or academic experience that demonstrates the readiness to supervise graduate student research at both the MA and PhD levels.
Demonstration of generative, beneficial relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities.
