Vision: To Support Equitable and Thriving Northern New Mexico Rural and Rural Remote Communities Producing research and services on best practices throughout New Mexico and the Southwest with National Implications

Mission: Rooted in a community-based approach, the ICLRLT is developing a Pathways to Equitable and Thriving Communities model that asks three key questions: (1) How do we identify equity research methods and pedagogies? (2) How are we supporting thriving communities? and (3) What are the unique cultural and geographical needs of Northern New Mexico? Central to the model is the translation of research into action. To conduct community-based research in rural Northern New Mexico and identify innovations to address the Yazzie Martinez vs the State of New Mexico findings and lead curricula review and revision toward equity alignment with the Tribal Remedy Framework (TRF). The Yazzie/Martinez v. State of New Mexico decision exposed a deep racial and equality division in New Mexico that needs systemic change and to ensure that all students, including Native Americans, receive an equitable and culturally relevant education. The TRF is a comprehensive plan for meeting the educational needs of Native students and their tribal communities. It was created collectively by tribal community members and Indigenous education experts, following a series of tribal Community Education Institutes and Pueblo Convocations. The TRF has been endorsed by the leadership of New Mexico’s 23 Nations, Tribes and Pueblos.
