Hiring Department The University of Texas Permian Basin's College of Arts and Sciences welcomes applications for a tenure track, full-time teaching position as an Assistant Professor of Music and Associate Director of Bands on a 9-month contract to begin August 2024.
Salary Range
$60,000.00 depending on qualifications
Essential Functions We seek individuals with a passion for teaching and a desire to engage students in Undergraduate classes in Music and in serving as Associate Director of Bands. In addition, the University sponsors a range of developmental activities for faculty, supported by the Heimmermann Center for Engaged Teaching.
Official duties and responsibilities of tenure/tenure-track faculty members include teaching, service and scholarship.
Teaching • Faculty are expected to teach undergraduate courses. • Faculty schedules include Face-to-face and/or hybrid teaching interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus for a minimum of four days a week. • Student course evaluations are to be completed in each course. • Abide by deadlines and processes for submitting grades. • Advise students and provide individual help to students during weekly office hours. • Participate in course/laboratory revisions and curriculum development as assigned. • While tenure track, the load is 3 courses each semester. Load balancing (such as 2 one semester and 4 another) may be permitted. • Achieve appropriate student-learning outcomes in all courses taught. • Faculty are expected to employ sound pedagogical practices and use appropriate technology. • Mentor students to prepare them for professional practice, graduate studies, and research. • Provide support to students in need of academic improvement.
Scholarship • Tenure-track faculty should publish in refereed forums (journals, proceedings, etc) • Achieve creative merit through composition, arranging, conducting, or other areas as identified in the Music Faculty Tenure and Promotion Policy.
Service • Shared responsibilities for conducting the Falcon Marching Band, Concert Band, Brass and Woodwind Ensembles, Recital Attendance Hour, and Athletic Band • Manage Junior and Senior Recital series • Assist the Dept Chair in coordinating the Music Department recruiting funnel • Acting on university committees, • Work on curricular reform. • Represent the department at recruitment and other events. • Actively participate in the department’s expansion • Work with other faculty and staff to advance the program. • Attending department, college, and university faculty meetings. • Attend convocations, commencement exercises, recruitment activities, and community meetings.
Required Qualifications 1. Doctorate in Music 2. Evidence of experience and success in directing bands and in higher education teaching 3. Experience in Music Education courses at the secondary and/or higher education level. 4. Ability to teach courses in the following areas: Marching Band and Symphonic Winds. 5. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications 1. College-level teaching experience, which may include teaching as a graduate student; project-based or lab teaching experience. 2. Ability to teach in all areas of the program. 3. Other expertise in woodwinds and musicology is regarded as an advantage. 4. Experience with students’ academic mentor 5. Relevant industry and practical experience.
