Carlow University’s Art & Design program invites applicants for a full time, tenure-track position in Digital Art and Emerging Media. The candidate will be adept at navigating both industry practices and conceptual studio-based approaches to support our fastest growing tracks in Digital Media, Graphic Design, Animation and Digital Communication and have both demonstrated teaching experience and potential for scholarship. The ideal candidate should have the skills to teach a breadth of courses within the fields of art and design, including but not limited to: digital media foundations, digital photography, publication design, graphic design, typography, motion graphics, 2D/3D animation, 3D printing, artist video/video production, user experience, web design, and digital storytelling. Other courses might include game design and AI/generative art.

This position is situated within an interdisciplinary programmatic space and offers an opportunity for the candidate to build out curricular capacity in extended reality (AR/VR/MR), game design, and creative coding through collaboration with our new Computer Science and Esports programs and Digital Communication program. Additionally, this position will work with the Art & Design Program faculty to build upon our new Fabrication Lab.

The ideal candidate will blend critical thinking, interdisciplinarity, and digital literacies with technical skill sets and should have expert technical knowledge in Adobe Suite Software, among other industry standard tools as well as incorporate design thinking and iterative concept development across the curriculum. Additionally, the successful candidate will also participate in student advising, program coordination and ideation, departmental/university service opportunities, and recruitment planning, events, and activities.

We seek candidates with experience supporting the learning needs of students from diverse and underserved backgrounds and who demonstrate an ability to center ethical and inclusive design and creative practices. Commitment to global awareness, justice, and equity efforts in pedagogical practices, art making, and scholarship, as well as collegial and student mentorship are desirable. Excellent communication, collaboration, and organization skills are necessary.

Job Duties:
•The candidate will be responsible for teaching 12 credits per semester for both the spring and fall semesters for undergraduates and graduates in art and design, and non-majors in a variety of modalities.
•Advising undergraduate and graduate students in art and design, and other majors as needed.
• Program/departmental support and service, recruitment planning, events, and activities.
•Maintain and oversee studio spaces and labs.
•Support departmental, college, and university grant initiatives and special projects as needed.

Required Qualifications:
• MFA or terminal degree in visual art, design, new/digital media, or a related field of study.
•Demonstrated experience in, and commitment to, teaching at the university level and experience in hybrid and online instruction.
•Capacity to respond in pedagogically productive ways to the learning needs of first-generation students and students from diverse backgrounds.
•Excellent verbal and written communication, and collaboration skills.
•Capacity and commitment to interdisciplinary pedagogy and creative practices.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Leadership of and/or vision for curricular and program development.
•Experience and a willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment that also houses Communication and English programs.
•Demonstrate a strong commitment to innovative teaching methods including engaged learning strategies and new technologies.
•Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the department, college, and university’s continuing commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
