Faculty - Instructor or Assistant Professor, Computer Science

Carlow University is currently accepting applications for the position of Instructor/Assistant Professor of Computer Science beginning August 2024.

The Department of Computational and Chemical Sciences invites applications for a full-time instructor or assistant professor position in Computer Science. This is a nine-month, full-time academic appointment to begin in Fall 2024. Academic rank will be commensurate with education and experience. Applicants with expertise in software development are especially encouraged to apply.

The faculty member will be responsible for teaching courses in our newly launched B.S. in Computer Science, with a focus on courses in user experience, app development, data structures and algorithms, and accessible web design. Courses will primarily be taught face-to-face, with possible online courses as well. Candidates should expect a teaching load of five days per week on campus.

A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in computer science, UI/UX design, software design, or another related discipline is required, though a Ph.D. is preferred. Candidates must have at least one year of teaching experience in higher education, especially with diverse populations of undergraduates. Experience with Python, HTML/CSS, and JavaScript are required.

Responsibilities
Teach 4 courses each semester. The computer science major includes courses such as App Development, User Experience, Web Development, Cross-Cultural and Accessible Web Design, C Programming, Data Structures, and Algorithms. Courses will primarily be taught face-to-face and in Python. Candidates must be available for on-campus teaching multiple days per week.
Facilitate student learning, provide effective instruction, and perform evaluations of student learning for all assigned classes.
Develop course lectures, projects, and assignments for each course.
Be available to students via email and personal meetings. Preferred methods of communication and time of availability for office hours must be clearly stated in the course syllabus and adhered to throughout the semester.
Assign grades and maintain student records in accordance with FERPA regulations.
Meet all course responsibilities, including class meeting times and office hours, throughout the semester.
Participate actively in department- and university-level service, including academic advising.

Required Qualifications
Master’s degree or Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline. (Ph.D. preferred).
At least one year of teaching experience at the college/university level, especially if working with diverse student populations.
Ability to teach multiple courses in the Computer Science curriculum.
