Description
The University of Lynchburg, a private regional university, located in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of History with teaching and scholarly expertise in the history of the United States since 1861 to begin in the 2024-2025 academic year for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The candidate should have experience with archaeology and be willing to oversee Lynchburg’s archaeology minor as well as teach courses in the DELL general education curriculum. Preferred areas of teaching and scholarly activity include Civil War and Reconstruction, Race and Slavery, Historical Archaeology/Cultural Resource Management, or Modern US History.

The Assistant Professor of History reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Department Chair and the Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the Department Chair. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description.

Specific Job Duties:

Teaching courses in history and archaeology for majors and minors and courses in the DELL general education curriculum.
Collaborating with colleagues on curriculum development, supervising student research projects, service to the University and community, and engaging in scholarly activity.
Applying best practices to facilitate teaching and learning processes and principles with a commitment to continuous quality improvement.
Documenting student learning, interpreting outcomes, and recording grades.
Assisting with student recruitment, admission, and retention.
Maintaining accurate and appropriate student, instructor, course, and program documentation.
Establishing and maintaining professional and ethical boundaries with students, co-workers, and others in all learning environments.
Participating in University service and events.
Perform other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Dean.

Teaching Load:

The normal teaching load is 12 hours per semester, consisting of general education and upper-level courses.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications/Education:

A Ph.D. in History or Archaeology
Teaching experience as either an instructor or teaching assistant
Archaeology or cultural resource management
Deep scholarly knowledge of 19th-century and 20th-century US history
