About the Department/College

The Kitt School of Music at Northern Arizona University continues a proud tradition of training the next generation of music teachers, performers, and scholars. Undergraduate programs in music include education, performance, liberal arts, and the certificate in piano pedagogy. Graduate programs feature concentrations in performance, collaborative piano, conducting, musicology, music theory, and music composition.

About the Position

The NAU Kitt School of Music seeks a dynamic, creative, collaborative, and dedicated teacher of piano and jazz/commercial piano to serve as a non-tenure-eligible Assistant Professor of Practice. The successful candidate will foster student growth through successful teaching and work as a collaborative pianist within curricular pathways for three undergraduate degrees in music (Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Arts in Music) and the Master of Music. The position requires positive mentorship for students from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels, who are pursuing a broad range of careers, including education, performance, and liberal arts.

This position is a nine month non tenure track teaching position.

Responsibilities Include:

Teach private lessons in piano and jazz/commercial piano.
Work as a collaborative pianist with students and faculty in classical and jazz settings.
Teach in a secondary area, according to candidate strengths and departmental needs, such as class piano, ear training, or music technology.
Active and sustained recruiting is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in piano performance or related field.
Performance and teaching experience within professional or academic settings.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to perform and teach classical and jazz piano.
Doctorate in piano performance or related field.
Experience as collaborative pianist with voice and instruments.
Track record of successful teaching at the university/collegiate level.
Evidence of potential for continued scholarly/creative contributions to the profession.
Demonstrated success recruiting at the collegiate level.
Experience teaching in one or more secondary areas.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge of trends in piano/keyboard performance, literature, and pedagogy.
Ability to coach and perform as collaborative pianist with voice and instruments.
Ability to work collegially with faculty from studio, ensemble, and academic areas.
Commitment to and/or success in working with diverse populations on campus and in the community.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range is $60,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
