Assistant/Associate Professor of Literacy

Salisbury University, a member of the University System of Maryland, is a regionally accredited four-year comprehensive institution offering 62 distinct graduate and undergraduate programs. Located on the historic Eastern Shore, SU's beautiful campus is some 30 miles from the Atlantic beaches and 2.5 hours from Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The Department of Leadership and Literacy Studies in the Seidel School of Education at Salisbury University welcomes applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Literacy. This is a 12-month, tenure track position. Summer teaching is required.

The successful applicant will join a collaborative department that offers a master’s degree for reading specialists and an education doctorate in literacy. Department faculty demonstrate a strong commitment to graduate education, share a sociocultural perspective about literacy, and value equity, social justice, diversity, and inclusion.

Job Summary

Responsibilities include teaching master’s and doctoral level courses, mentoring and advising doctoral students and chairing dissertations, serving on committees, conducting and disseminating research, and university, professional and/or community service. Strong interpersonal skills necessary for working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and external constituents.

Authority and Accountability

This position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Leadership and Literacy Studies. There are no anticipated supervisory roles or direct reports. However, there is potential for supervision of graduate assistants based on the needs of the program and department. The Department Chair and Dean have direct budgetary responsibility and authority.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctoral degree in literacy from a regionally accredited or internationally reputable institution. If ABD, doctoral degree must be completed before hire date. Demonstrated research agenda in literacy with evidence appropriate for level. Three years of successful literacy teaching experience in prek-12 or adult education programs. A commitment to implementing and advancing the values of equity, diversity and inclusion through service, mentorship, teaching, and scholarship.

Preferred Qualifications

Reading specialist or literacy coach professional experience. Experience teaching or mentoring graduate students. Experience teaching in online contexts. Experience recruiting and retaining students from underrepresented backgrounds. Bilingual in Spanish or Haitian Creole. Experience with mixed methods, quantitative research, or practitioner research. Literacy clinical supervision experience. Experience with program assessment and/or accreditation. Demonstrated engagement with the professional literacy community.
