University Police Officer II

Salisbury University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of University Police Officer II. All applicants must currently possess certification through the Maryland Police Training Commission.

Primary Job Duties: Conduct foot, bike and/or mobile patrol in the areas of the University primary and concurrent jurisdiction to preserve law and order, prevent and discover the commissions of crimes, direct traffic, enforce State and local laws. Conduct investigation of incidents and submit written reports. Respond to calls for emergency service. Perform other related duties.

Minimum Qualifications: At least 21 years of age, high school diploma or GED, a valid Maryland non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license with 5 or less points for moving violations, U.S. citizen, good health and physical condition, no felony or misdemeanor convictions. Must be certified through the Maryland Police Training Commission. College course work combined with other professional training and experience dealing with the public is preferred.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Thorough knowledge of citizens’ rights and responsibilities; federal, state, and local laws. Skill in stressful situations imperiling public safety; in operating emergency vehicles under all conditions; in the care and use of firearms, defense tools, and criminal detection devices; in communicating effectively; in operating radios and telephones in a variety of environments; in conducting confidential investigations. Ability to apply knowledge, experience and reason to arrive at prompt and effective decisions; to show sensitivity in interactions with diverse population; to maintain composure, professionalism and restraint at all times; to perform extensive sitting, driving, standing, walking, climbing, and running; to lift, drag and carry heavy objects. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and interact well with the University community. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.

As a condition of employment, candidates are required to participate in a background investigation, and those candidates selected for employment will be subject to pre-employment drug testing as well as a medical examination to determine ability to perform the job. Officers of the department work rotating shifts to include holidays and weekends with rotating days off and overtime as necessary. To be considered an applicant you must submit proof of MPTC certification.

This is a full-time non-exempt State position with a full benefits package. The salary is $55,757 annually or $26.80 per hour which is commensurate with the applicant’s level of law enforcement experience.
