The Police Officer in Training is responsible for the public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. This position follows a career path leading to specialization in Police Patrol and the opportunity to promote to Police Officer. What you need to know

The pay for this position is $29.95/hour.

You must be Certified as a Police Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

You may be required to work weekends, holidays and hours other than Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

Required Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED.

Two years of full-time employment experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:

Certified as a Police Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)

Must have a State of Texas class 'C' vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population.

Ability to function under adverse and stressful conditions.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Other Requirements:

Meet minimum licensing standard requirements as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)

Must be in excellent physical health and stamina

May be required to work weekends, holidays and hours other than Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.

May require out of town travel

Successful completion of field training program

Applicant must pass an entrance exam to be considered for employment

Applicant must successfully pass psychological evaluation, physical examination, and complete background investigation to include but not limited to driving history, criminal background, and credit history

​Preferred Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree.

Previous experience in a college or university environment and experience dealing with the public.

​Responsibilities:

Patrol specific area on foot or motorized conveyance, responding promptly to calls for assistance. Monitor, note, report, and investigate suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area.

Record facts to prepare reports that document incident and activities.

Issue citations or warnings to violators of motor vehicle laws.

Identify, pursue, and arrest suspect and perpetrators of criminal acts. (May require heavy lifting.)

Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved.

Investigate traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed. (May require heavy lifting.)

Process prisoners, and prepare and maintain records of prisoner bookings. (May require heavy lifting.)

Testify in court to present evidence or act as a witness in traffic or criminal cases.

Inform citizens of community services and recommend options to facilitate long-term problem resolution.

Performs other duties as assigned.
