Job Summary

The University of Southern Mississippi is accepting applications for the 2024-25 academic year, for multiple nine-month, full-time visiting instructor positions within the School of Kinesiology & Nutrition, College of Education and Human Sciences to begin fall 2024. This position requires teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses (for qualified candidate) in the school, and mentoring students. The School administers programs in Exercise Science, Sport Coaching Education, Nutrition and Dietetics, and K-12 Physical Education Licensure. The ideal candidate would be qualified to teach courses that support at least one of the school’s programs.

The school: The School of Kinesiology and Nutrition houses state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities. Our newly renovated teaching and research spaces include a dedicated Biomechanics lab (equipped with Qualisys motion capture, 6 AMTI fixed force platforms, AMTI moveable force platform, Noraxon EMG suite, and AMTI instrumented treadmill), Exercise Physiology lab (equipped Biodex system 4, GE U/S unit, Treadmills, Cycle ergometers and Hokanson cuff), Anthropometric Assessment lab (equipped with GE iLUNAR DXA, In Body 720), Foods lab (equipped with 8-station industrial, stainless steel teaching kitchen with video technology). The school also supports two federally funded centers/labs including the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research Community Engagement and Training Core, and the Applied Biomechanics Head and Neck Kinematics and Concussion lab. For over 50 years, our School has enjoyed a rich history of securing federal and state funds for research and teaching endeavors as well as working with community partners, stakeholders, and organizations towards the aim of improving health and human performance and preventing disease and injury.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

A visiting instructor appointment involves:

Teaching undergraduate and graduate coursework;
Maintaining regular and responsive communication with faculty, staff and students;
Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students;
Engaging with program coordinators and faculty to maintain quality teaching and assessment standards;
Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a field that would support teaching in one of the School programs (Exercise Science, Sport Coaching Education, or K-12 Physical Education Licensure).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds, programs, and colleges.
Field experience in one of the school’s program areas.
Skill sets associated with use and application of common Kinesiology and Nutrition field equipment and tools.
Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, University policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. from an accredited college or university in a field that would support graduate teaching in one of the school’s programs (Exercise Science, K-12 Physical Education Licensure, Sport Coaching Education, Nutrition and Dietetics). Experience in teaching courses at the College level.
