Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University (Hempstead, NY)
Center for Children, Families and the Law
Post-Graduate Family Law Fellow

The Center for Children, Families, and the Law at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University is seeking to hire a Post-Graduate Family Law Fellow to function as a staff attorney to provide supervision of the second and third year law students on two pilot programs created by the Center: (1) a mediation project in which specially trained and monitored students will help mediate marital dissolutions involving parents, focusing on the welfare of the children; and, (2) a guardianship project for indigent and developmentally delayed youth and undocumented aliens – a largely unmet need in the community. Such position will be a one-year fellowship commencing on or about August 15, 2017.

The Center for Children, Families and the Law was established in 2001 in response to the urgent need for more effective representation of children and families in crisis. Its mission is to provide interdisciplinary education, community service and research to benefit children and families engaged in the legal system, including those with the added complexity of undocumented alien status.

The Center utilizes an integrative training program grounded in specialized courses, simulations, a hands-on client clinic and seminars that provide the foundation for interdisciplinary research in family law, mediation, and alternatives to litigation. It also offers advanced training for professionals in the field by sponsoring lectures and conferences and promoting dialogue among academic disciplines, policy makers, and the judiciary.
Through the Center, students are afforded unique opportunities to participate in community service, public-policy projects and research. The goal is for students to not only experience how their legal studies apply in society, but also to truly make a difference.

The Fellow will report directly to the Executive Director as well as the Director of Policy and Planning for the Center for Children, Families, and the Law. It is also anticipated that the Fellow will appear at and participate in Court Conferences and Hearings (under appropriate supervision). Additionally, the Fellow will be afforded the opportunity to observe many aspects of litigation practice in courthouses in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and to meet with experienced attorneys, court personnel, and members of the judiciary. The fellowship will focus on both the skills and education necessary for professional development, while promoting a culture of service to the community.

- Juris Doctor awarded from Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University in May 2017 or December 2016.
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to community/public service
- Prior clinical experience preferred but not required
- The applicant must have already taken the New York State Bar Examination in July 2017 or February 2017
