Position Summary

The Director for Innovation and Venture Development will lead the university’s new initiative in “collaborative innovation” (CI) for the creation of licensable products and/or new business ventures by leveraging Bowling Green State University’s programmatic strengths in education, the arts & sciences, the digital arts and technology, the computer sciences, and data sciences. The Director will develop and implement an operational plan for the creation of new entrepreneurial ventures at BGSU which integrates into the Northwest Ohio Entrepreneurial Services Provider (ESP) program. The Director will also be responsible for managing BGSU’s portfolio of inventions and intellectual property as they go through development, evaluation, protection, marketing, licensing, and new start-up business development. This is position is Grant funded, continued employee is contingent on renewal of the grant which is expected but not guaranteed.

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Through a collaborative process, conceive and execute an operational plan for encouraging the creation of new entrepreneurial ventures at BGSU by leveraging the programmatic strengths of the university.
  • As part of the Northwest Ohio Entrepreneurial Services Provider program, support to early stage business ventures in product development, technology validation, customer discovery, business plan development, and overall assessment.
  • Serve on the Northwest Ohio ESP working group in helping to create a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in the region.
  • Manage the protection BGSU’s intellectual property (IP) through patents, copyrights, and/or trademarks according to the University’s IP policies, as they involve such constituencies as BGSU inventors, BGSU Patent/Copyright Advisory Committee, Office of Sponsored Programs, Research Compliance, General Counsel, external counsel, the USPTO and other experts as needed.
  • Commercialize BGSU intellectual property through traditional and non-traditional license, service, development, material transfer, and testing agreements etc. with outside parties.
  • Develop innovative relationships with external companies, agencies, and organizations that advance the goals of the Collaborative Innovation initiative.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree required, preferably in Science, Engineering, Business or related area. Also the follow experience is required:

  • Three to four years evaluating technology for further development, commercialization and development of business plans.
  • Two to three years experience with intellectual property protection (i.e., copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret).
  • Two to three years negotiating industry-sponsored research agreements, licenses, service agreements, material transfer agreements, confidentiality/non-disclosure agreements.

Salary

Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 360. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available. This is position is Grant funded, continued employee is contingent on renewal of the grant which is expected but not guaranteed.
