DDP seeks a senior communications director to lead communications and marketing strategy and implementation across multiple business units. DDP’s communication and marketing efforts span the work of the Detroit 300 Conservancy (which manages and programs more than 1,000 events each year in Downtown Detroit parks and public spaces); the Downtown Detroit Business Improvement Zone (which manages the Downtown Ambassador workforce and directs supplemental safety personnel, landscaping and overall stewardship of the Downtown); and DDP (which serves as the core entity responsible for stewarding the Downtown and convening stakeholders to ensure that the voices steering growth and development are balanced and representative of the community).

Help us develop a strong narrative that connects our work and drives awareness of the important role we play in the Downtown. As a director in a senior leadership position, you will work closely with DDP’s executive team to identify key messages and implement a communications plan that effectively positions the organization locally and nationally.

The person selected as the Senior Communications Director will maintain a high standard of communication in all formats on behalf of the organization, leading a team responsible for promoting a unified brand across multiple channels and with multiple audiences. He/she will elevate DDP’s approach to messaging and marketing and will consistently demonstrate success through strong metrics, authentic audience engagement, and increased community and visitor involvement in DDP-led programming.


  1. Overall team/department management: Effectively manage and develop members of the marketing/communications team. Effectively direct consultants in the execution of marketing and communications projects (including public relations, web, creative, multimedia and events) on time and within budget. Manage the production of the DDP Annual Report, BIZ Annual Report, Perceptions Report and other key collateral pieces as needed.
  2. Strategy development: Develop and manage the implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive marketing/communications plan for DDP, as well as an effective vendor management strategy. Coordinate DDP Board and BIZ Board communications in collaboration with the Community Engagement Director. Work closely with other DDP directors to track metrics and ROI across all DDP communication efforts and improve on strategies as needed.
  3. Branding and positioning: Create the strategy for narrative and storytelling efforts of DDP. Serve as a spokesperson on behalf of DDP. Ensure articulation of DDP’s desired image and position; consistent communication of image and position throughout the organization; and effective communication of image and position to all constituencies, both internal and external.
  4. Budget management: Draft a recommended marketing/communications budget annually and effectively manage the department to deliver results within the approved budget.
  5. Processes and procedures: Develop standard operating procedures to organize the work of the marketing/communications team. Manage the overall tracking and evaluation of related metrics. Understand and utilize technology solutions where applicable.
  6. Event strategy: Define the content and messaging strategy for DDP signature events (including Annual meeting, Detroit Aglow, Summer Stakeholder Meeting and Fall Stakeholder Meeting).
  7. Relationship-building: Build and sustain relationships and cross-promote in collaboration with key partners, sponsors, Downtown businesses and public space stakeholders.


  • 10+ years marketing, communication and corporate event experience (nonprofit experience preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, marketing, advertising, business administration or a related field
  • Demonstrated success in a management role with budget management responsibilities
  • Ability to coach and develop staff
  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the development and management of marketing, communications and public relations plans and activities
  • Knowledge and understanding of Downtown Detroit and its business and community demographics
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Polished and professional presentation of self, ideas and communications
  • Excellent organizational, time management, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills
  • Detail-oriented with high quality standards
  • Ability to provide strong and clear artistic direction
