Job Description:


Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Controller is responsible for the overall control of the general ledger, budget reporting, Business Office, Payroll, and cash management. This position works with department Directors, Program Chairs, and the Institute's external auditors and is a strong contributor to and leads the day-to-day accounting operation, develops policies, and works to improve procedures and internal controls. The Controller will work closely with other functional areas and academic programs. Candidate must exhibit capacity to quickly grow into VP of Finance position.


  • Leads the monthly, quarterly and year-end accounting closes
  • Works closely with the VP in the process of budget development and revision
  • Monitors the budget and prepares monthly variance reports
  • Participates in budget discussions at the Institute Planning & Budget Committee and Board of Trustees meetings
  • Assists the VP to develop and monitor enrollment and revenue projections
  • Monitors all tuition and non-tuition revenue streams and prepares monthly status reports
  • Oversees reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts
  • Reports daily cash balance
  • Coordinates the financial audit and liaises with external auditors
  • Oversees all compliance reporting requirements with banks, lenders, third parties; prepares IRS Form 990 Information Returns
  • Analyzes income and expenses of auxiliary operations, clinics and public programs
  • Supervises six full-time department staff
  • Advises the VP on the financial condition of institutional funds and accounts, and on appropriate fiscal procedures
  • Consults to clinics, auxiliaries and Public Programs Department on good cash handling and internal control practices
  • Compiles data and prepares reports, statements, studies and analyses as required, and in a timely manner
  • Administers an accounting system for all funds which fulfills internal and external information and reporting requirements and complies with GAAP, GASB, and NACUBO guidelines
  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of Jenzabar accounting module
  • Performs other duties as needed


  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting or Finance; master's degree preferred
  • Accounting designation (CPA or CMA) is highly desirable
  • 5+ years accounting experience in higher education or non-profit entities
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Supervisory experience
  • Detail oriented and results driven
  • Excellent understanding of enterprise database systems
  • Knowledge of an ERP such as Jenzabar is highly desirable
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of fund accounting for not-for-profit entities desirable

Salary commensurate with skills and experience.


  • Working Conditions -- Duties are primarily performed in an office environment at a desk or computer terminal, typically, Monday through Friday.
