The Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Researcher, in the area of Epidemiology. The initial appointment is for one year, full-time with the possibility of renewal based on performance and the availability of funding.

 

The early career researcher would join a team that specializes in designing, implementing, and evaluating programs around the world to improve health and wellbeing. More about the research can be found at:

Duties:

The Assistant Researcher will be a member of the Principal Investigator’s (PI) research team and will work under the general direction of the PI. The ideal candidate loves exploring data, has a strong foundation in epidemiology and biostatistics, and has experience leading projects using techniques from causal inference, econometrics, or related disciplines. At the same time, the ideal candidate also has a passion for fieldwork and data collection, working in global settings (particularly in sub- Saharan Africa), collaborating with a diverse team, and applying new and innovative approaches to global health (e.g., human centered design, machine learning). The specific duties of the position include: leading independent statistical analyses, writing peer-reviewed manuscripts, supervising observational and experimental epidemiological studies, and developing and contributing to research proposals, and disseminating research findings through attendance at conference and other venues. Demonstrated research productivity will be expected.

 

The candidate will be expected to spend 50% of their time supervising several ongoing research projects related to sexual and reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa and 50% of their time leading data analysis activities and writing grants and manuscripts with the research team.

 

Basic qualifications (required at the time of application):

 

• Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program

 

Additional qualifications (required by the start date of the job):

 

• Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree)

 

Preferred qualifications:

 

• Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in epidemiology or economics

 

• Publication record which demonstrates research productivity

 

• Experience managing large complex projects abroad

 

• Work experience in advanced data analysis skills in R or equivalent

 

• Experience with data visualization; e.g., R Shiny

 

• Experience working on projects in collaboration with government and implementing partners
