The Public Health Sciences Undergraduate Program and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS) at the University of Vermont (UVM) invites applicants for a full-time, nine-month position at the rank of Lecturer to serve as a faculty member (70%) and Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) (30%).
We seek a professional with expertise (academic, professional, and/or lived experience) in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI), health equity, and public health. The position will fill a vital role serving as the CNHS DEI Director working with the dean and the college leadership on developing DEI initiatives. Additionally, the position provides an exciting opportunity to launch and teach courses in a new undergraduate Public Health, Equity and Advocacy minor, as well as, mentoring and advising students.
The successful candidate will be able to contribute to UVM CNHS’s DEI commitment of educating the next generation of health professionals committed to the pursuit of health equity, the assurance of optimal health for all, as both a social justice outcome for society and as a metric of health professionalism for our entire CNHS community.
This position will have profound impact on CNHS college culture and the student experience, and directly contribute to the mission of both the University of Vermont and the Public Health Sciences Undergraduate Program. This position begins in Fall of 2024.
The Public Health Sciences Undergraduate Program, accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health, is a fast-growing major committed to preparing students for careers in health-related fields. The mission of the program is to strive for health equity by preparing the next generation of leaders to improve the health of individuals and communities through basic science and applying the principles of population health. The program attracts students committed to justice, advocacy, and using public health as a vehicle to reduce health disparities.
Responsibilities:
Serve as Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS) and as a full member of the CNHS Leadership Team.
Oversee the Public Health Equity and Advocacy Minor and develop/teach relevant coursework.
Develop DEI initiatives and assist in the implementation of the current CNHS 5-year Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Action Plan.
Work in partnership with DEI directors across campus and the community to bridge all aspects of equity on campus.
Actively support and mentor BIPOC and underrepresented CNHS students.
Serve as an academic advisor in the unit for the Public Health Undergraduate program.
Qualifications:
We are seeking a Masters-trained individual in Public Health, Social Work, Education, or related field with expertise (academic, professional, and/or lived experience) in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Candidates with experience directing organizational wide DEI initiatives are highly desirable. Direct practice experience in public health equity or community-based practice are also highly desirable. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in undergraduate teaching and employ innovative and inclusive practices in the classroom.

The College
The college is home to more than approximately 1,200 students in eight different health professions comprising seven undergraduate and six graduate degree programs including an interdisciplinary PhD. The College is committed to inter-professional education and practice and educational innovation. We are part of an academic health sciences center including Vermont’s tertiary care hospital, the Larner College of Medicine and a state of the art interdisciplinary clinical simulation laboratory, within proximity to the University campus.
The Department
The Department of Biomedical and Health Sciences is part of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences (https://www.uvm.edu/cnhs/bhsc). The successful candidate will join a department with tenure track, clinical faculty, lecturers and staff that are dedicated to educating the nearly 300 undergraduate students and 15 graduate students in our programs. Program offerings include undergraduate majors in Public Health Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Medical Radiation Science and an MLS Master’s degree.

The greater Burlington area has an increasingly diverse population of about 125,000 and enjoys a panoramic setting on the shore of Lake Champlain, between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains of New York State.
