Primary Function of Organizational Unit
NCCU’s Department of Art and Design offers students the opportunity to earn a B.A. degree in Art with concentrations in Graphic Design and Innovation, Animation and Interactive Media, Studio Art, Art Studies, and Pre-Architecture, as well as a B.S. degree in Apparel Design. The Department’s overarching mission is to foster broad inquiry within the visual arts and design to provide opportunities for students to study non-western, diverse cultural artifacts and experiences. As the first public liberal arts institution founded for African Americans, NCCU occupies a special niche that informs the study of art and design. In addition to traditional training in the visual arts, the Department of Art and Design proudly celebrates and fosters the study of artistic productions of African and African American culture, emphasizing the past and present contributions of people of color. With such emphasis, the Department provides a uniquely designed curriculum to educate students pursuing visual arts and design careers in today’s global society. Art and Design majors explore technology, engage in internships, pursue individuality and enjoy the fruits of cultural diversity.
Primary Purpose of Position
The NCCU Department of Art and Design seeks an inspired architect and educator to teach architecture and design courses within our new Pre-Architecture concentration. The ideal candidate will have professional experience as well as a passion for teaching the theory, history, and practice of architecture. This faculty member will prepare students for careers in the field through studio-based learning, critiques, and exposure to traditional and cutting-edge design approaches. The successful candidate will also pursue scholarly research and service activities to advance the program and profession. Above all, this role involves empowering the next generation of architects with the knowledge, skills, and vision to evolve the built environment. This is a chance to shape the next generation of architects and built environment leaders.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidate will be a licensed architect holding an M.Arch or PhD in Architecture, with a strong record of professional accomplishment. They will have experience teaching architecture at the university level using studio-based pedagogy and hands-on learning approaches. A dedication to mentoring students, especially those from diverse backgrounds, is essential. The position requires excellent communication abilities, leadership skills, and organizational acumen.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Instructional
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
The Assistant/Associate Professor of Architecture will be responsible for teaching architectural design studios and lecture courses covering essential topics like building technology, structures, site analysis, and architectural history. They will incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as parametric modeling, digital fabrication, and virtual/augmented reality into the architecture curriculum. Developing and leading study abroad programs focused on experiential learning will provide students with impactful learning opportunities.

Function Research
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
In addition to teaching, the faculty member will pursue sponsored research and creative activities to advance the field of architecture and design. They will disseminate new knowledge by publishing scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals and/or participate in juried exhibitions, and presenting at academic conferences.

Function Public Service
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Serving on departmental, university, and professional committees and engaging in community service activities allows the professor to shape policies and practices. They will also play an integral role in recruiting, advising students and facilitating exhibitions, partnerships, and internships to enrich experiential learning.
