Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The primary purpose of organization unit (department) is to protect life and property of the students, faculty, and staff on the campus of Fayetteville State University and to support the University’s core mission of academic excellence by providing comprehensive and professional public safety services, as well as convenient access to a peaceful and orderly campus community.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The Senior Police Supervisor reports to a Captain of the Department of Police and Public Safety. The Senior Police Supervisor position of Lieutenant is a sworn law enforcement officer that serves as a supervisor with full powers of arrest and is responsible for enforcing the laws of the Local, State, and Federal Government. Employees in this class are assigned special administrative and management duties.
Description of Work Continued:
15% – Appraises operational activities and takes necessary action to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness; plans and prepares work schedules for personnel. Prepares, reviews, and approves various reports such as time sheets, weekly and monthly activity reports, case reports, and arrest reports. Review all reports completed by subordinates to ensure the accuracy and detail of information adequate for the type of report submitted. Recommends follow-up investigations as required.

10% - Work involves supervision and management of personnel within the department. Duties may include personnel actions, internal investigations, crime prevention and analysis, responsibility for training staff, scheduling and managing officer records.

10% – Collect proof of compliance, document adherence to established standards, advise on standard updates, and prepare and review a wide variety of records and reports. Work is performed in accordance with departmental policy and state and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from the Police Chief and/or Deputy Chief.

10% - Duties may include orientation and training of officers, inspections of officers and/or other departmental personnel on a shift or unit, conducting pre-shift briefings, review of all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift, activity coordination, discipline, conducting performance reviews, and providing input concerning operational planning.

10% - Plans, directs, and configures work assignments for department personnel and directs necessary resources. Manage shift unit coverage and employee schedules and leave under his/her command. Coordinate and schedule personnel to conduct presentations and participate in activities and events as necessary on campus.

10% -Trains, supervises, and reviews work of subordinate personnel assigned to his/her division, ensuring adherence to established policies, procedures, and standards; advises and assists subordinates concerning policies and program directions, as necessary, and resolves problems as non-routine situations arise.

10% – Conducts inspections of vehicles and equipment of officers within the division assigned. Evaluate personnel actions, maintain discipline, and conduct performance reviews.

10% – Ensures that department emergency response equipment is operational. Send out information via campus safety alert systems. Maintains the department’s website. Maintains personnel actions and statistics, makes monthly reports to the appropriate reporting agencies, evaluates personnel actions, and conducts internal investigations.

5% - Conduct or assist with background investigations of new officers and employees when necessary. Assist in maintaining accurate records of officer’s annual mandatory in-service training. Ability to identify the educational needs of staff; and the ability to train and instruct others.

5% – This position will provide leadership in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for the Fayetteville State University community and provide management with information necessary to address regulatory and actual losses associated with Environmental Health and Safety.

5% -Any other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:
A minimum of a bachelors degree or greater and 6 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associate degree and 8 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience.
At least 3 years of the experience requirement must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater.
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission [Valid Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Certification]; Intermediate or advanced certification preferred. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
A North Carolina driver’s license and outstanding driving history are required.
