The Department of Special Education (DSE) in the College of Education (COE) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) invites applications for the position of Chair and Professor.

Founded in 1964, the Florida Atlantic University College of Education enrolls over 2000 undergraduate and graduate students annually. Five academic units offer degree options in teacher education, curriculum and related areas, special education, educational leadership, counseling, and communication sciences and disorders.

About the Department
The Department of Special Education provides leadership in our local, state, national, and international communities in the areas of teaching, research, and service. Faculty and Department efforts promote research-based practices that reflect changing societal needs of people with disabilities, their families, and the professionals and organizations who work with them. This is accomplished by bringing faculty, students, and members of our various communities together to improve the quality of education for all members of society. The DSE is deeply committed to a community of excellence and equity, and as such welcomes applications from candidates who will contribute to improving the quality of education for all members of an increasingly diverse, technological, inclusive, and global society.

The Department offers programs leading to Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. These degree programs lead to teaching certification, endorsement, and other types of certifications, offered in a variety of formats (e.g., fully online, hybrid, face-to-face). Department programs are flexible and accessible to a broad variety of students. The Department also houses the Academy for Community Inclusion (ACI) and the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD). ACI is a college program for high school graduates who have been diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities. CARD provides expert consulting, training and support, at no charge, for all people with autism and related disabilities, their families, employers, the professionals and community and governmental agencies serving them.

Responsibilities
The department chair serves as senior faculty member and administrator to eight full-time, tenured faculty members. At the departmental level, this person is responsible for faculty recruitment and development; instructional program development and quality enhancement; coordination of departmental research and service programs; evaluation of personnel; and, through the dean, representation of the department inside and outside of the university. The department chair also maintains relationships with students, other administrators, university councils and committees, alumni, professional organizations, and various other public and private groups. In conjunction with the college dean, the department chair develops the department's annual budget request, administers expenditures of the allocated funds, and manages other resources available to the department. The Chair facilitates effective relationships within and across department programs and, as a member of the college's leadership team, and works collaboratively with the dean and other unit leaders to guide the work of the college.

Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications. Applicates must have:

• An earned doctoral degree in special education or related field;

• A distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and service sufficient to meet tenure eligibility requirements of Florida Atlantic University and be eligible to hold the rank of full professor at the time of appointment;

• Administrative, managerial, and financial knowledge and skills to effectively lead an academic department;

• History of obtaining and supporting external funding;

• Leadership in pre-service and in-service special education teacher education, including doctoral education ; and

• Excellent record of teaching and mentoring students at undergraduate and graduate level.


Desired Qualifications. Applicates should have demonstrated:

• Success as a collaborative leader, with effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to effectively lead the department in working with multiple constituencies;

• Ability to promote the department’s strategic and research priorities;

• Excellence in faculty development and mentoring;

• Expertise initiating and maintaining program accreditation;

• Experience in developing and maintaining partnerships with schools and school districts.

• Additionally, the candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time of the appointment and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. A background check is required for employment in this position.
