General Statement of Job

Reporting to the Assoc. Vice President for Student Success, the Executive Director of the Student Success Center will provide leadership and direction for the overall operation of the MSSU Student Success Center including Academic Recovery, Advising, Career Services, Disability Services, First-Year Experience (orientation experiences and curriculum), Special Student Population Programming, Student Employment, and Tutoring. The Executive Director of the Student Success Center also coordinates the University Experience curriculum with oversight of initiatives and activities designed to facilitate optimum learning experiences for various student populations. Additionally, the position will foster collaborations within and between the various academic programs as well as between and among the university's administrative and support units to improve the university's retention, progression, and graduation rates.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties:

Student Success Center Leadership:

Develop, coordinate, implement, manage, and promote the university's Student Success Center (SSC) programs and budget, including the articulation of a vision and goals for each unit within the department, the creation of programs in support of the SSC, the identification of potential grant funding for program enhancement, and the gathering and dissemination of all necessary program assessment data, and reports.

Identify and enhance existing programs and services as well as set direction for future phases of SSC programming to include efforts designed to serve both the general student population as well as special student populations such as commuter students, non-traditional students, veterans, graduate students.

Implement an effective data-informed system for informed decision making and assessment, which includes processes for feedback and improvement, to evaluate efforts and results to ensure effective and efficient engagement and support services are provided to students through the SSC programs.

Oversee website management, promotions and publications, and internal and external communication for the department.

Collaborates with other University offices and personnel to fulfill SSC mission, objectives, and goals.

University Experience Curriculum:

Develop, coordinate, implement, manage, and promote the University Experience curriculum (courses with UE prefix) to include the gathering and dissemination of all necessary program assessment data, and reports.

Arrange schedules of classes and is responsible for the recruitment, hiring, supervision, rewarding, disciplining, and evaluation of full-time and adjunct faculty who teach in the University Experience curriculum.

Develop materials for instructors, mentors, and students (instructor manuals, Lion’s Guide, website, Sharepoint sites, etc.).

Provide ongoing training for faculty in teaching the University Experience curriculum in their respective disciplines.

Facilitate First-Year Learning Community (FLC) development and implementation.

Recruit, hire, train, and supervise student peer instructors.

Teach 2 credit hours per academic year (fall, spring, summer), if needed, in the University Experience Curriculum.

Direct meetings with UE faculty and peer mentors.

Develop and maintain a communication plan for students in their first year of enrollment.

Assist UE 100 students referred through Lion Alert.

Maintain and periodically review student learning objectives using appropriate measures to assess the outcomes. Communicate outcomes with the campus community.

Participate in applicable academic processes to ensure curriculum follows institutional, state, and other applicable policies and procedures.

General:

Serve on departmental, divisional, and University committees; represent the department at campus presentations.

Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, being aware of applicable local, state, and federal laws, understanding high impact practices, and attending training and/or courses as required.

Prepare lists of budgetary and other needs and administers department budget. Provide effective management of the University’s fiscal resources including fiscal responsibility for assigned budgets and assists with the overall supervisory authority for the budget process in the SSC units.

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the University’s policies and applicable laws.

Address complaints and resolves problems.

In accordance with University policy and applicable laws, supervise, evaluate, hire, direct, reward, discipline, and resolve problems with and for personnel working in the Student Success Center.

Contribute to the overall success of the University by performing other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Licenses

Master’s degree required, (doctorate preferred), in education, educational psychology, curriculum and instruction, higher education administration, student affairs, or a related field.

Strong computing skills and knowledge of relevant technologies (learning and management systems, and other academic support and administrative systems) are required.

Ability to speak effectively in front of large groups, demonstrated effectiveness in working with diverse people in a variety of situations and demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently in a dynamic, fast-paced, team-oriented atmosphere.

Demonstrated leadership experience, supervising full-time employees, required. Three (3) years experience in higher education administration with progressive responsibilities preferred.

Preferred experience providing academic support to students in a college-level setting; experience in college-level teaching, presenting workshops, and academic advising; supervisory experience; experience in the fields of tutoring, learning assistance, tutor certification and/or other related student learning/development programs at a university; experience in academic and student support programs and initiatives.

Experience in first-year program development and teaching is preferred.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Ability to be organized, flexible, and manage self, work time, and work space effectively.
Ability to make ethical decisions in doing what is best for both students and the University.
Ability to practice high ethical standards, adhere to FERPA standards, and the practice confidentiality with work-related information including employee information.
Requires the ability to make recommendations that impact the budget.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common business and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, regulatory agencies, administrators, members of the Board of Governors or members of the general public.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, and percentages.

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
