POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
ABOUT THE COLLEGE
John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. Led by President Karol V. POSITION OVERVIEW
• The John Jay College of Criminal Justice English Department and College-wide Vertical Writing Program invite applications for a Lecturer in Composition and Rhetoric to begin August 2024. As a majority-minority and Hispanic-Serving Institution in New York City, John Jay College is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to our mission of educational justice for all students in our diverse community. • Successful candidates will join an award-winning writing program (CCCCs Certificate of Excellence) and collaborate with an engaged full-time and adjunct writing faculty to play a crucial role in student academic success by designing and teaching courses in the required two-course first-year writing sequence.
After five full years of service and annual reviews of teaching and service, lecturers are eligible for a "certificate of continuous employment" (CCE), a tenure-like designation which applies at the sixth annual reappointment. It is a teaching position with major expectations of departmental service. The successful candidate will teach an annual 24-credit hour course-load of three and four credit classes. (Note: The First-Year Writing course sequence, consisting of English 101/201, features 4-credit courses.) Candidates will: contribute substantial service to the Vertical Writing Program including Writing Program assessment, curriculum design, faculty mentoring, faculty development, and creating, implementing, and assessing college-wide literacy initiatives (some of which carry reassigned time that reduces the teaching load); serve on program, department and college wide assessment committees; and participate energetically and collegially as a faculty member of the English Department, the College and the University communities.
Candidates for Full-Time Lecturer in Writing Positions should have demonstrated knowledge, experience, and credentials in the following areas:
• Teaching diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, and educational backgrounds.
• Knowledge of the theories and best practices of composition and rhetoric studies, including active student-centered pedagogy and creative curriculum design in research-based academic writing at the post-secondary level.
We are particularly looking for candidates that have the following specialized knowledge, experience, and credentials (applicants should speak directly to these three specialized areas in their applications):
• Minority Rhetorics: As a majority-minority and Hispanic Serving Institution, whose students are often first in their family to attend college, lecturer candidates will have a strong understanding of teaching strategies and practices for a diverse student population, especially generation 1.5 students, as they work within and across Academic W
• Professional/Technical/Disciplinary Writing: With diverse majors in English, Public Administration, Computer Science, and Criminal Justice, for example, lecturer candidates will work to design, teach and support student literacy abilities and rhetorical knowledge in targeted disciplines.
• Digital Literacy and Rhetoric: Since all of our writing courses have a digital portfolio requirement, and given the importance of digital rhetoric knowledge in our students’ lives, lecturer candidates will have a strong focus on digital platforms, self-publishing, and multi genre digital rhetoric style.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
• Master's degree in Rhetoric and Composition, Language and Literacy, TESOL, Linguistics, English Education, or equivalent field is required. Additional graduate coursework, including ABD, or Ph.D. candidates will be considered, though lecturer positions do not have a scholarship/publishing agenda.
• At least three years of demonstrated, successful experience teaching first-year writing and/or upper level writing courses at the college level.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience within the range of $69,983 - $87,004.
